Kelly Acevedo grew up in south Los Angeles, surrounded by gang violence. As gang activity began to directly impact her family, they decided to relocate to Mexico. However, by age 14, Kelly was eager to return to the United States on her own, so that she could get a better education. The road only became harder from there, and despite incredible odds, Kelly persevered to achieve her dream of “becoming someone.” She’s now set to be the first in her family to graduate from high school and is deciding on the college of her choice thanks to becoming a prestigious Gates Millennium Scholar. Seeker visits Kelly as she looks back on her journey and prepares to celebrate, like any other teenager, at prom – with the help of Say Yes to the Prom.
