WHEN OUR GODS REVEAL THEIR CLAY FEET

Human beings need their heroes. We need our icons to be larger than life. Those we idolize help us decide who we are. The people we admire are signposts and north stars for us. We look to our heroes hoping that their wisdom, talent and insight has elevated them above the human condition and therefore there’s hope for us too! We need to believe they’ve FOUND THE ANSWER. And then our gods reveal their clay feet. Maybe they succumb to disease, depression, or just aging. Life gets the best of them. And we are deflated. For this reason, we often turn to those heroes already dead, the ones that have become their own myths. We traffic in their wisdom as if somehow it’s a testament to their immortality. And it sort of is… But it also isn’t. They still died. And yet they live forever.
